Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan
From its position facing the sea, Jiufenshan Mountain offers incredible views of the surrounding area’s natural beauty. The adjoining mountain peaks and nearby ocean expanse combine to create a vista like no other. The adjacent community is a welcome echo of simpler times, offering a lifestyle that hearkens back to days long gone. Homes are built to a nine-fold scale and seem to effortlessly conform to the mountains. Small, “Feng”-style streets and sharply angled stone steps wind their way through the town, providing pedestrians with the strange sensation that they’re strolling along the rooftops of the houses themselves. The roadways— Light Road, Jishan Street and Car Road—follow horizontal lines from top to bottom. Vertically, the road emerges from a seemingly endless ascent of stone steps which number in the hundreds. In this unique locale, those traveling on foot make their way between the lanes of cars. For travelers who value unique experiences, a visit to this town should be high on the list.
